I have played at several different tournaments and have a question about burning the first card. Most games I have seen the dealer cuts and then burns the first card, but there have been several tournaments that dealing is passed around the table and they say if the deck is cut (by someone other than the dealer) the card is not burned. Is there an actual rule to this method.

Even if the cut is made by someone other than the dealer, there is still a burn card before the flop. I played with one group where they were even burning a card before the DEAL, but I let them know that's not required.

Shuffle
Cut
Deal
Bet
Burn
Flop
Bet
Burn
Turn
Bet
Burn
River
Bet

Smile

I was just wondering about the burn before the deal.

Never seen a burn before the deal...and actually, when you think about the purpose of a burn, there's no reason to do it.

The burn was meant to prevent people from knowing in advance which card was coming next, if the deck were somehow marked. That's why you burn right before you turn, rather than before all the betting is done.

Therefore, burning before the deal makes no sense.

In fact, you could argue that burning in most home games where people trust each other is pointless, but that's for another thread.

If we were *really* worried about it, we'd be dealing all the cards from a protected shoe.

i find it ultra annoying when people burn a card during action or lay the whole board out face-down after the deal (yet, burn a card anyway).

play enough home games and i guess you'll pretty much see it all.

One of the groups I play with burns a card before the deal, however they flip it and use it similar to a cut card on the bottom of the deck.

Someone *has* to see it when they do that... c'mon!

I didn't say it worked...I just said it was something "they" did....

Maybe that's why I lose a lot more when I play with them...... Very Happy
