|
|
I made it through the first break unscathed. Didn't take any big chances. At the beginning of round #4, there were 84 players remaining and I had T1,250 (slightly ahead of the average stack). Haven't had to show a hand yet.
The trouble hand...
I'm in the BB with Q-6 off. 3 limpers. I check. Flop is A-6-5. I'm first to act, so I bet the pot. 2 fold and the button calls. Turn is an 9. I bet the pot again. Button calls. I'm sure he has an A. River is an 8. I consider bluffing that I have a straight (a straight would've been the nuts), but reconsider. The other players checks saying, "Whew, you had me scared there" and shows A-10. Drat. I'm left with T700.
Should I have bluffed? Thinking back, I'm thinking a strong "maybe". What reason would he have had to really think I had a straight? _________________ --

|
|
Despite mistake #1, I recovered. I got up to T2,000 by going all-in with pocket 10's against pocket 7's. At this point I was once again above average.
Our table broke up during level 5 and I was doing well. About 60 players remained and they were dropping fast.
Now, the mistakes. I probably could have sat back and waited for better cards, but I got greedy. I bluffed two pots I had no chance of winning, and got raised both times...so high that I couldn't call. The result: I was down to T700 again. _________________ --

The raised bluffs really weakened me, and I was now to the point of having to decide when to go all-in.
The blinds were 100-200 with a 25 ante. I had 1,100 left. I called pre-flop with 8-9 suited. The flop was 7-9-J. Middle pair with a gut shot. I bet about half the pot. The other player raised large. For me, this was the deciding point of the tournament. It was either all-in or fold. Fold and I still have a few BB's left. I folded!
Looking back, this was the wrong decision. I was left with T700. The blinds went up to 200-400 2 minutes later. I ended up getting forced into going all-in with 3-9 off when the BB got to me. I was eliminated.
I really should've gone all-in with the 8-9 after the post-flop raise. _________________ --

|
|
Overall, I was quite happy with my play...save for the 4 mistakes (maybe only the last one was a real mistake, though).
On the plus side, I started taking notes during tournaments (which, it turns out, actually intimidates some people...believe it or not).
My notes:
- Through the first break and haven't had to show a hand yet.
- I'm not afraid to fold! Good hand selection so far!
- Made a bluff raise from the SB without realizing that someone else had called. Oops. Pay attention!!
- Had Aces against Aces in a showdown. Chop.
- Didn't follow through on a bluff. Got knocked in half. Could've won this one with a bluff due to the 4-cards to the straight on the board.
- Doubled to over 2K with pocket 10's. Pocket 7's called.
- Table broke with 1475.
- KO'd 2 in 1 hand. JJ vs. A-10 and Q-9.
- Forced out with 3-9o in BB. Shouldn't have ended up in that position.
I also kept track of what my stack was at the start of each round. Finally, I had a little table showing what the average stack was for a given # of players remaining (100=T1000, 95=T1111, etc.) _________________ --
