Question I have is setting up the minimum bet to be the big blind. Well if on the second round of betting, say after the flop, someone bet's $100, which is the big blind. In order to raise is the person raising forced to match the $100 and raise at least another $100, or can they raise $50, if they wanted to for some strange reason, other than that is all they have?

I believe the official rule is the min raise must equal the big blind. Think of it this way, a bet is just the first raise...

Now there are exceptions - i.e., if the person raising is going all in, and doesn't have enough to meet the min raise requirement...

The verbage for my home games is that any bet or raise must be equal to or greater than the big blind. I do not require it to be equal to the previous bet/raise (These are my house rules YMMV).

most home games i play are the same way, though a reraise must at least equal the initial bet or raise.

so, if the BB is 100, and someone wants to make it 200, fine.

if the BB is 100 and someone wants to make it 250, fine, BUT, the next raiser must make it at least 400, which is 150 more than the first raise of 150.

Most rules state the minimum preflop raise must be double the BB. The minimum re-raise would be double the amount of the raise, not the total bet. i.e. (blinds 50/100 UTG makes it 250 to go. the next raised bet must be minimum of 400, doubling the initial raise of 150). Post flop: The first bet to an unopened pot must be at least the amount of the BB or more(in NL, follow bet progression in Limit). As far as raises are concerned that would be the base bet for the round. i.e. Post Flop (1st position bet 150, second position raises to 400, the next raise must be total of 650 or more). Some house rules state that once a bet or raise has been made you must double that bet. Advice: be sure to set house rules and stick to them, eventually you will run into a multi raised pot with short stacks pushing differant amounts, the question always is can I reraise or is the pot frozen. Answer: you can only raise an "all-in" in 2 situations If this all-in equalls a full raise or if you have not acted yet.

Most casinos' and other large formal tourney's rules I've played in have all been the same. Which is the example Chlos gave. (Which I believe comes from Robert's Rules of Poker)...

The minimum bet/raise must be equal to the Large Blind or the last bet/raise, whichever is larger.

Pretty simple one sentence rule.... but here's what that means....

(for these examples we'll assume the blinds are at 50/100... to keep the math simple)

PREFLOP

Minimum raise if no one has yet raised the pot is 100

if someone makes that min raise (to 200) next raise is still a minimum of 100 (to 300)

if someone comes in for 4x BB (400) that is a raise of 300... so the next raise must be a minimum of 300 (to 700)

POSTFLOP

Minimum bet is 100

if someone leads the betting for 350 then the minimum raise is 350 (to 700)

let's say someone bets 250 then someone else raises to a total of 750. That equals a raise of 500... so the next raise must be a minimum of 500... to 1250.

Online sites that use "proper" casino rules follow this structure as well.
