We play during lunch at work - there's a group of 12 of us that play 50 minute tourneys. Usually we get a mix of 4-7 people. Using the log method, the league leader has a score of 1.125 thru 8 tourneys. Even with 7 players, he has to finsh in top 2 so that his average won't drop. Therefore, since he's already met the min # of tourneys to qualify for league title, he's thinking about not playing anymore so not to lose his lead. I asked for some additional scoring help so that it may not be so easy to sit out, but is there anything else we can do?

So does sitting out give someone else the opportunity to overtake his average? Does the 2nd place player have a shot at the lead by finishing first?

Is this guy really so afraid and uncertain of his skills that he is willing to endure the name calling and taunting your group will undoubtedly heap upon him? Wink

One thing you could do is randomly draw for one tourney to be removed from the average. This would put some pressure on the top players to get in as many tourneys as possible lest the tourney you remove be one of those in which he finished high.

Actually, he's the only person to make all 8 tourneys so any cumulative rankings he will be even further ahead.

As for the taunting, not sure how he'll react. Actually, it was someone else who mentioned the fact that he should sit out for the rest of the time.

I kinda think that's smart! It's sort of like if Michael Jordan retired (for good) at the top of his game.

ButI understand how frustrating it could be for the man in second. Here's how I'd get around it - hold a tourney for the top 7 people in the "league" and the winner of that is dubbed champion. Then have a consolation prise for the points leader...

Thats exactly what we do, just like the WSOP, the weekly events are satalite events for the championship. The winner of each satalite earns a "free" seat to the championship.

The points leader gets a prize as the "Player of the year" would, but the championship is up for grabs.
