Just random thoughts here. As I'm thinking about the round-robin heads-up tournament type, it's making me think of the related types and I'm doing some modeling. I'll just summarize what I'm thinking about, if anyone cares.

I'm considering 6 future tournament types, and this is probably the order in which I'll be creating them:

Type 1: Round-Robin Heads-Up
Players play heads-up matches against each other for a set number of rounds. At the end of the tournament, players are ranked by the match winning percentage. App will ensure that the matches are set up as fairly as possible.
Pros: Everyone plays the entire tournament. Tournament duration is predictable.
Con: As tournament goes on, people that suck start to lose hope and stop trying to win?

Type 2: Multiple-Elimination Round-Robin Heads-Up
This is a tournament type I came up with, and I'm going to implement it in the tool. Must like the round-robin heads-up, but you decide how many losses someone can amass before they are eliminated. The tournament continues until only one player is left who hasn't logged the maximum number of losses. Final standings are again based on winning percentage.
Pros: Everyone always has a shot at winning up until they are eliminated.
Cons: Tournament duration fluctuates.

Type 3: Round-Robin Multi-Player-Per-Match
Just like the round-robin heads up, except that three or more players take part in each match. You decide the number of rounds. Players receive a score in each match depending on their performance. Final standings are based on player total match scores.
Pros: Predictable duration. Everyone plays entire tournament
Con: Just like standard round robin, people can lose hope when they have no shot at winning.

Type 4: Single-Elimination Bracketed Heads-Up
Just like the NCAA basketball tournament. One and done. You seed players (manually or randomly) and generate the bracket.
Pros: Predictable duration. Everyone has a shot until elimination
Con: Half the people are done after the first round.

Type 5: Double Elimination Bracketed Heads-Up
Just like the NCAA baseball tournament. Two and done. You seed players (manually or randomly) and generate the bracket.
Pros: Predictable duration. Everyone has a shot until elimination.
Con: Players are done after 2 losses. Too soon?

Misc
The biggest challenges here are:
- Generating a single-elimination bracket structure based on a player count: I've actually got this figured out. I can generate a single-elimination bracket based on any number of players.
- Generating a double-elimination bracket structure based on a player count: That's next
- Graphically rendering the bracket in a form that allows you to take action on it: That's after that
- Graphically rendering the bracket in a form suitable for display on the console (and getting it to work on clients), and letting you select which parts to display: That's the really hard part at the moment.

And, for now, these tournaments will not allow late arrivals...unless I figure out a way to do that. There's realistically no fair way to handle a late arrival in any of these tournaments (regardless of software).

What about a combo round-robin+single elimination bracket?

Standard round-robin play and the take the Top X players from winning percentage in round-robin play to seed a single elimination bracket for the final tournament placement.

I have found JGraph. It may be what I need to make our dreams come true.

I'll think about that one also.
