I kinda feel bad for the boy now. We've all ganged up. Let's pass the hat and each donate a dime.
On second thought - let the cheapster limit his game to 12 people!

Hehe guys. Yeh ganging up indeed! Chill!
My game last night was awesome. Ended up being 10 as 2 chickend out (see, people do that, with a rake I'd get about another 5 not turning up).
I ended up coming 4th for which we had a payout of £5 so wooo got my cash back. Was a tad unlucky at times, but overall, a good game.
Grrr MaxPower you're making me sound like a scrounging git here, saying you should all donate! I don't want that!
Can someone pleeeeease clear something up for me...
So you pay $10... you get a password... how does the software know that after 3 months you need to pay again? Does each pass last for only 3 months and the software knows this? It's probably a well simple system but I don't fully understand tbh! |

That's Doc's magic secret...
Every month a new password is given by Doc. The software knows when a new password is needed (and tells you when it's up). Doc gives you th password o' the month, and BOOM! you're back in business!

LOL. It was the term "well simple", not the fact that he doesn't understand. Why would you leap to that conclusion anyway?
BTW, what race is Ali G?
PS I can't believe that I actually typed "Ali's G" instead of "Ali G's" |

Ali G is very funny (well funny infact). Yeh, over here we sometimes use slang like that, not meaning to sound like Ali G, although I guess that is where it came from.
But does you fink dat we shud sort dis fing out wit da Dr Neau Tourney Manager and I shud just go ahead and buy da fing? I'll 'av to 'av a fink about it, but mebbe I will go down dat road. I 'int racialist, just gunna 'av to fink about it. |

But on the other side of things... well... you may all think I am cheap, but so what.
Never did I ask for a "cheap" option. Yes, I didn't say that.
Maybe it's just because $10 to me makes it seem like £10 even though I know it's much cheaper than that.
I'm looking into buying the thing, but still don't think I can rake. Afterall that makes it illegal in this country, AFAIK. But maybe I can charge for the pizza I give out and add on the cost of this. |

There's a difference between a rake and having all players share in the cost of playing. _________________ --

I don't think it's like that in the eyes of the law. You're still making money from hosting a poker game in an unlicensed venue. Even if all that money goes on buying the software, it's still a rake.
But anyway, it was just a remark, not that it would stop me from taking a rake. Just as I say, less would play if I took a rake. |

Hold on a sec...
First, you have to ask the question:
Q1: Is it legal for me to have a tournament where people pay $5 each and the winner(s) take all the money.
If the answer to that question is "yes" (in most places, like Minnesota, it isn't), then you can proceed to the next question.
Q2: Is it legal for me to have everyone who is participating in the cost (i.e. everyone shares in the cost of food, supplies, etc.)
If the answer to Q1 is "yes", then I seriously doubt that the answer to Q2 is "no".
Now, Q3 is a different question:
Q3: Is it legal for me to charge players an extra amount that I'm going to put into my pocket for "time and labor".
I'm going to guess that unless you are a casino, the answer to that question is usually "no".
In my mind, Q2 and Q3 have nothing to do with each other. _________________ --

Fair enough.
I don't have the time or inclination to find the exact British law (America is VERY different on gaming rules remember - you guys have the mega-casinos which we arn't allowed to have, yet, for instance).
I was only making a small point which was meant to be light hearted and not cause a few pointless posts about the ethics and lawfulness of home poker games.
I did read somewhere that as long as all the money is going to the prize pool then it's ok to have a home game. As soon as any rake is on, which of course includes payment to cover costs, after all, you are then a business... then you must have a gaming license.
Anyway, let's leave that there. |

Well.... you don't live in Maine Doc... LOL
Believe it or not... in Maine as long as all money in play goes back to the player in the form of prize money it's considered "social gambling" which is perfectly legal.
But the law has this little "Catch"...
Quote: | "Social gambling" is gambling, or a contest of chance, in which the only participants are players and from which no person or organization receives or becomes entitled to receive something of value or any profit whatsoever, directly or indirectly, other than as a player, from any source, fee, remuneration connected with said gambling, or such activity as arrangements or facilitation of the game, or permitting the use of premises,or selling or supplying for profit refreshments, food, drink service or entertainment to participants, players or spectators. - Title 17-A, section 952, subsection 8.{1975, c. 499, §1 (new).} |
We used to hold our tourneys at the local Elks & Eagles lodges. NONE of the buy-in went to anything but the prize pool... they were 100% payback. However, using that part of the law, the lodges were threatened by the state with heavy fines and the loss of liquor licences if they allowed the games to continue.
I have a rant about this and a proposed "charity game Hold'Em bill" here:
